Teacher Observation Report
Date: 24.08.2023
Observer: Nethini Hettiarachchi
Grade: 4
Subject: English - Simple Present Tense
I had the privilege of observing a grade 4 English lesson focused on the simple present tense conducted by Adithya Perera. The lesson was conducted in an inclusive classroom with both boys and girls. The teacher employed various effective classroom management techniques such as questioning, giving instructions, explaining, eliciting, encouraging, and feedback to engage and support the diverse group of students.
The classroom was arranged in a way that encouraged active participation and interaction among students. The atmosphere was welcoming since the lesson started with a good morning song, ensuring that all students felt comfortable and welcomed. The students were grouped to facilitate group work and appointing a leader for the group can be mentioned as a good technique to enhance collaboration. Involving cartoon characters for the post-task was appealing particularly for young learners. This activity promoted collaboration, creativity, and application of the lesson's content. It was evident that the students enjoyed this hands-on task and were able to apply the simple present tense effectively through the activity. The teacher effectively used a variety of teaching techniques throughout the lesson. Among them, questioning and explaining were prominent. The teacher provided constructive feedback to students, reinforcing correct responses, and gently giving instructions when needed. The technique of clapping and cheering the students was prominent from the beginning of the lesson.
The instructional approach employed in the lesson could have benefited from greater clarity and brevity. Furthermore, there was room for enhancement in the techniques utilized for audience engagement, as such improvements would likely have contributed to a more comprehensive understanding of the lesson among the students.
Students were actively engaged throughout the lesson. The teacher encouraged students to participate by creating a safe and supportive environment. Eliciting responses from students allowed for a range of perspectives to be shared, and students felt comfortable expressing themselves.
In conclusion, the grade 4 English lesson on the simple present tense was exceptionally well conducted. The teacher's classroom management techniques, engagement strategies, and the use of group work contributed to a dynamic and inclusive learning environment. The students actively participated and demonstrated a solid understanding of the lesson's objectives. Adithya’s dedication to creating an inclusive and stimulating classroom atmosphere is commendable.
